THE BUILD-A-BIKE CHALLENGE (CSR)

On 4 separate occasions (16th / 17th September, 18th December & 22nd December 2015), approximately 200 employees from MOM (Work Pass Division), 140 employees from Pacific Refreshments Pte Ltd and 30 employees from Bromma, got together for a teambuilding event with a difference. They were tasked to build & ensemble bicycles from scratch, which were then donated to the less fortunate children. Together with the team of Facilitators from FOCUS Adventure and professional technicians, the participants were actively engaged throughout the whole session.

Initially, the participants merely pieced together different bicycle parts by following the instructions manual. While focused on the task of building the bicycles, they were interrupted and shown short videos of the chosen beneficiaries, highlighting less fortunate members of our society, and the challenges and needs of the respective VWOs.

Thereafter, the Facilitators shared with the participants the hidden agenda of the entire teambuilding session, the incorporation of a special element of social responsibility, where upon completion, the bicycles would be inspected and donated to the beneficiaries. The enlightened participants then realized that with each bolt and nut they screwed or tightened, they were playing an important role in bringing happiness and smiles upon the faces of the less fortunate children. This gave them added motivation, diligence and care as they completed the bicycles.

A total of 45 bikes from MOM (Work Pass Division), Pacific Refreshments Pte Ltd and Bromma were given to the following 4 different beneficiaries:

–          Viriya Family Service Centre

–          Jamiyah Singapore Children’s Home

–          Beyond Social Services

–          Singapore Children’s Society (Jurong Youth Centre)

Working hand in hand with our clients, FOCUS Adventure will continue to strive to facilitate such CSR programs between Corporate and VWOs, to impact the society positively together.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Singapore

Each team will be tasked to build a robot together. After which they will be going through the learning session on manual controls and how to control them. This will allow their robots to be unique as compared to the rest. Their final objective will be to pit the robot that they built against man-made obstacles such as to carry items and moving from point A to point B or to going through a maze or to dance! The possibilities is endless! They will then customise a message for the children using the robots built and have it delivered to the beneficiaries.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand that it is not always the results that matter but also the process
  • Engage participant’s imagination and problem solving skills
  • Increase confidence and commitment levels
Allows greater meaning to giving and helping those in need
  • To tap on each other’s strengths and weaknesses
