KAYAK WITH LOVE ~ A CHARITY 4-DAYS ROUND ISLAND KAYAKING (HITTING THE SINGAPORE BOOK OF RECORDS)

KAYAK WITH LOVE ~ A CHARITY 4-DAYS ROUND ISLAND KAYAKIN(HITTING THE SINGAPORE BOOK OF RECORDS)

It was a great and amazing achievement for a group of kayak individuals and FOCUS Adventure with the full support of SeaOPS! This was a 2 month long planning with a primary goal to raise funds for Children Cancer Foundation and for FOCUS Adventure to lead a safe and fun expedition!

On Day 1, we launched off from the west! Early in the morning, it was a great start as everyone worked together launching the kayaks into the water. Everything was clockwork, it would not be possible if not for the multiple trainings that we had prior to the event.

Our first day served as a good warm-up at Kranji and the view was spectacular, as it was low tide and the mangroves were nice. Some of us even spotted a crocodile in the water! Everyone was in high spirits and the current was flowing with us! We got to beach up on land next to

Pulau Sarimbun! We had to stick in close formation as we had to stay away from restricted areas. After 20km, we have reached our destination!

On Day 2, our route was most tiring as we had to clear a total of 50km! From Raffles Marina to Sentosa! We started really early in the morning when the sun was about to rise

The challenge was to cross the Sinki fairway safely! Despite setting out early, the current was against us and traffic at the fairway was busy. But luckily we had 3 safety boats for support to ensure the kayakers safety! The vessels were huge and intimidating but safely we crossed the fairway with ease! We appreciate and thank MPA for their guidance!

In no time, we arrived at Pulau Hantu for a bit of ‘rest and relax’ for lunch! After crossing and enjoying the various islands, (we passed by islands such as Pulau Sebarok, Jong island, Sisters island, St John’s island, etc.) we safely reached SENTOSA!!! We had overcome a great ordeal where many who would have doubted us but we did it!

On Day 3, we kayaked to the east! We decided to visit several islands before heading off and the first one was St John’s island! A fun fact about St John’s Island is that it used to be a pandemic quarantine area in the 19th century! We shared a lot of fun facts and know-hows throughout the trip. The fleet continued paddling towards the east! We were in awe of the beauty of the city and the CBD area by the sea.

We were most fortunate to be able to cross the Keppel harbour terminal, which is also known to be a very crucial area as many vessels and ferries would be entering and exiting the area.

Luckily we had ‘guardian angels’ to oversee that we travelled safely!

Once we had successfully cleared, we continued paddling and our spirits were high! We passed by Marina Barrage and we were all happy and excited as we passed by East Coast Park! We were able to see from afar that everyone was enjoying themselves. After about 30kms, we arrived at our destination and off to a good rest for our final day!

Day 4, it was our last and final day! The team woke up early as usual and set off on our amazing journey! But we had to brave a huge rain cloud! The rain poured and our visibility was low but that did not dampen our mood for we were determined to wait for the right timing to head out again!

It was tough and there was nowhere to berth but it was all under control! Our lightning indicator and weather forecast showed that it was still possible to wait out for the storm to pass! Soon enough, for the sake of not getting hypothermia, the team then paddled towards the opposite side of CAHFI jetty and enjoyed a nice early lunch!

After Lunch, we continued our journey! Off to the finishing line, though everyone was getting tired, a lot of encouragement was shared amongst us and before we knew it, we had arrived at Pulau Ubin! It was nice as we were lucky to see a group of otters sand bathing as we passed by!

It was amazing as even though we were tired, the team continued on! Passing by Punggol and the moment we reached Seletar island it was another 6km more at last!

Hitting The Singapore Book of Records for the Largest Islands-Hopping Kayaking expedition!!! Celebration is in order and everyone was happy and more importantly we were all safe and sound!

This was definitely a trip to remember! With the amount of sweat, time and efforts placed into executing this expedition for a good cause. A good reflection is that many people out there may tell you or try to dissuade you from your goals, saying that it is impossible, “this cannot be done”, “you won’t get the approval” but as long as you have the faith and determination we can achieve our goals! What was also important is that we successfully raised a total of S$27,080 under giving.sg for Children Cancer Foundation!

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to MPA, DBS, the organising committee, FOCUS Adventure, SeaOPS and to everyone involved for making this possible! We had completed a total distance of over 160km! The mission has ended but the journey will forever continue!

We definitely look forward to the next expedition and we would like You to join us! Wait no longer, click on the link to join us for our next trip or our other awesome adventures! See you there!

Dear Andrew,

We would like to thank FOCUS Adventure for taking up the challenge and your generous support and sponsorship for our Round Island Expedition from 27-30 August to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

The planning and organisation of the expedition had its fair share of challenges, and we greatly appreciate the commitment of the Focus Adventure team, working out the details required for various approvals, supporting the training sessions, never hesitating to put in extra time and effort to overcome each challenge, and the many other tasks that helped make the expedition a success.

In particular, we would like to commend Berwin for his professionalism, dedication, tact and good spirits. He was always helpful, firm when he needed to be but always a pleasure to work with. He was knowledgeable, dependable and we could not ask for a more trustworthy and capable person to have on this project. We would also Iike to acknowledge the support from Kylie and Gilbert. Kylie meticulously organised and supported the project both administratively, but also in person for our training sessions when it was needed. Gilbert for the unwavering support to keep us safe while we train and on expedition. Without the wonderful team from Focus Adventure, the expedition would not be possible. Once again, thank you.

Above all, all of us organisers, kayakers, volunteers and supporters would like to thank the FOCUS Adventure team for the commaraderire, friendships and sharing our passion for kayaking and our desire to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

Thank you.

Regards,
Shirley M. Lim

Having had a couple of days to reflect on the trip and have the memories of the expedition sink in, a round of applause for everyone who participated as it is truly an achievement. Special thanks to Shirley and the organizing committee and volunteers who put in efforts seen and unseen to make this expedition a success. It is now clear there was a lot of behind the scenes effort by SeaOPS/Berwin and organizers to get an eleventh hour approval from MPA, without which this trip would not have been possible. It was amazing to see the “kampung” spirit on display with everyone pitching in to help wherever they can and I am also grateful for the generosity of the sponsors who allowed us to berth overnight and provided overnight accommodations, and especially the anonymous donor that sponsored our dinner at SAFYC. I was especially touched by the SBOR individual certificate ceremony which was totally unexpected and was icing on the cake and a nice memento of the trip.

For the fundraising campaign for our beneficiary charity, September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and I think we can leverage the story of our expedition to further raise awareness and hit the target of 40K.

Lastly it was great to meet new kayaking ‘kakis’ and like-minded outdoor/water enthusiasts and hope to see you on the water soon!

-Jeff

THE LARGEST SUPERMARKET RACE TILL DATE FOR LIFE COMMUNITY SERVICES SOCIETY (LCSS)

THE LARGEST SUPERMARKET RACE TILL DATE FOR LIFE COMMUNITY SERVICES SOCIETY (LCSS)

On 17th February 2017, we hosted our largest Supermarket Race till date! A total of 150 participants from Johnson & Johnson achieved this feat, during their 2017 Singapore Finance Day. The participants raced around Suntec City , attempting team based challenges to earn points. The points were then converted into real money, where they went to the supermarket to purchase as many items as possible. Approximately 30 different variety of items were bought, amounting to about 600 items in total quantity across 16 teams. The items bought included food products such as cereals and biscuits, household products such as plastic utensils and to electrical products such as electrical fans and induction cookers. The purchased items will be donated to Life Community Services Society (LCSS) and we sincerely hope that the donated items will help LCSS in many different ways. THE TEAM CHALLENGE HOURGLASS! FOR EQUAL-ARK SINGAPORE LTD

THE TEAM CHALLENGE HOURGLASS! FOR EQUAL-ARK SINGAPORE LTD

On 22nd February 2017, FOCUS Adventure hosted 15 staff and scholars from EQUAL-ARK Singapore at our Sentosa Site. EQUAL-ARK is one of our official beneficiary, and they have helped many vulnerable youths remain engaged in the community through education and employment through their philosophy of equine-assisted learning. The EQUAL Scholars program have benefited over 150 beneficiaries from 30 institutions, allowing vulnerable youths to learn and develop skills in teamwork and social inclusion through specialized frameworks.

The 15 of them participated in our Team Challenge Hourglass, which was the highlight of the day for them. It was definitely a big challenge for many of them, having to face their fear of heights and move together as a team. However, it was heartening to see their support and encouragement for each other, ensuring that no one in the team was left behind.  We believe that this opportunity is valuable to them and to us, creating the interaction which will develop their social skills,  enhance their team bonds and the ability to better control and manage their fears.

CPG FAMILY BONDING DAY

CPG FAMILY BONDING DAY

1st April, not just April Fools’ Day, but it also marked a milestone for FOCUS Adventure! For the 1st time, we organised a Family Bonding Day combined with a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) element in it for 900 participants. The highly successful event combined indoor and outdoor activities for both young and old, and was done with ideas both from us and the organisers.

Highlights included an Incredible Race around Sentosa on bicycles for 190 participants, Beach Olympics (Bubble soccer, Dodgeball, 4-way volleyball, Captain’s ball, Frisbee), movie screenings, stalls (Carnival games, food, Photobooth etc) run by participants with proceeds going to charity, Lucky Draw, Live Music band and more!

Even when faced with rain towards the end of the event, it didn’t dampen our spirits as we quickly switched to our wet weather plans without affecting the participants’ energy and spirits, making the day a fun one for the participants and ourselves. With the benchmark now set, we will continue to strive to raise the bar for future Family Bonding Days!

BREAKING NEW GROUND!

BREAKING NEW GROUND!

Within 2 weeks, on 20 March 2017, FOCUS Adventure broke new ground yet again in terms of sea-based programmes when we conducted a Dragon Boat programme for an entire company of 160 people. For the 2nd time this month, we were once again able to break our own record for the biggest Dragon Boat programme by simultaneously launching 16 Dragon Boats from Raffles Marina.

Following which, the participants painted on individual canvasses according to the theme “At Our Best Everyday”, before combining the canvas into a bigger story with one another. All in all, it was an impactful day with many milestones, not only for the participants but also for FOCUS Adventure.

BASIC OFFICERS COURSE (BOC) 25

BASIC OFFICERS COURSE (BOC) 25

The Basic Officers’ Course (BOC) is a specially designed course which allows every participant to experience 5 days inclusive of almost the entire range of activities that FOCUS Adventure provides. It is not only an initiation for anyone who would like to pursue a career with FOCUS Adventure; it also allows them the opportunity to realize if this job is the right fit for them. Part of the course also allows the Lead Facilitator managing the course to observe the behavior of the participants and choose those who demonstrate the greatest Leadership potential.

The BOC is designed to be a 5 day course which includes a session related to the vision, mission and all other methodology upon which FOCUS Adventure is based upon, plus a profiling session and The Leadership Challenge (TLC) session for participants to better understand themselves and their Leadership styles. It also gives participants an opportunity to learn and understand the debrief processes used in FOCUS Adventure, and a chance to experience the various activities, facilities and resources that FOCUS Adventure has, including our Sembawang, Sentosa and Raffles Marina sites, our sailboats and ending off with climbing the Team Challenge Hourglass to end off the entire course.

The BOC is a course that cannot be compared to anything else in the market and it definitely takes “Challenge” to a whole new level. The course is open to people outside FOCUS Adventure as well for a certain fee and will certainly allow everyone who attends it, a glimpse into the exciting career of a Facilitator at FOCUS Adventure!

Here’s what our BOC graduates have to say about their experience:

Name: Trevor

The overall experience of the 5 days 4 nights BOC was extraordinary. I have never felt learning can be so much fun and engaging. Each activity that was introduced came with a purpose and we were given the chance to elaborate on what we have learned and our interpretation of the “take away message” of the activity.

I am glad that our group is small as it allows us more time to discuss and learn more from the Facilitators.

The Facilitators are really professional and made me feel a sense of belonging.

The best part of the whole programme is that I managed to meet and befriend a group of great people and through the teambuilding activities, we get to understand each other better.

It is a shame that I have not been selected by FOCUS, but i am still glad that i managed to take away some of the teambuilding, Leadership, and Innovation Development knowledge from the course. Managed to understand FOCUS more, open up a career option that I have never thought of, and also to meet and befriend a group of friendly and interesting people.

I am grateful for the BOC experience.

Name: Berwin

Entering FOCUS adventure without attending Basic Officer Course is like attempting to ride a motorbike without thoroughly understanding the mechanics of the bike and the unique functions it may possess. Fortunately for me, the 5D4N BOC camp has not only become an aid in understanding the company better, but also as another stepping stone in my life journey. The camp offers interesting insights to the DISC personality test allowing us and our Facilitators to get to know us better. There were also Leadership practices embedded into our activities which were conducted during the camp, we modeled the way by listing down our expectations and we align our actions towards shared values, we inspired a shared vision amongst our peers to accomplish the task given to us.

One of the interesting points that differs FOCUS adventure from other teambuilding companies, is the methodology of using a paradigm shift. This allowed us to bring experiential learning from the current activity and how can it link back into organizational and their behaviours. This also allowed us to better challenge the process of our activities and to think out of the box.

To be honest, many of the activities we have done such a combined escape room/night maze, Sailing, Team Challenge Hourglass, were extremely challenging as it forces me and my TEAM out of our comfort zone. However, we were able to enable each other to act and to cooperate in accomplishing our goals at hand. Lastly, our Facilitators did a great job by patiently encouraging us and imparting us with their knowledge and expertise in managing difficult problems. It was heartwarming during the initiation process knowing that we have gone through so much. Furthermore, the journey has just begun and we will continue to encourage one another by showing appreciation and working hand in hand to a common goal in FOCUS adventure.

Name: Madeline Tay

Attending the Basic Office Course as a Programme Manager allows me to expose to the activities conducted by Facilitators which aids in my knowledge before proposing activities to client by understanding to their needs and objectives. It enhances my knowledge towards FOCUS adventure and operations of the company. The 5D4N camp is interesting as it offers insights into our DISC personality profiling test, allowing us to know ourselves better, how we can improve ourselves and lending a helping hand to one another. Though expectations are laid out during the first day, what is important that what we gained throughout the camp and apply to our future work.

The Facilitators did a great job in encouraging us and motivate us throughout the 5D4N camp, even though I’m afraid of heights and I had mental break down during the Team Challenge Hourglass and managed to suppress my fear to make it through the stages. Furthermore, this camp allows us to make new friends, building strong bonds between one and other, showing encouragement and head towards the common goal in FOCUS Adventure.
